Central Florida Fair Cattlemen’s Invitational Ranch RodeoRanch Rodeos have been taking place throughout Florida for over 60 years; these rodeos are small community events in which traditional working cowboys and cowgirls gather to compete amongst themselves demonstrating the skills that are used in everyday cattle ranching operations. However, these rodeos are held in very rural communities with little or no public awareness or attendance. Therefore, in keeping with our mission to preserve and enhance the agricultural, cultural and historical legacy of Central Florida, the Central Florida Fair set out to produce a grassroots community event that would educate and entertain our visitors, showcase Florida’s cattle ranching industry and promote Florida’s rich agricultural heritage. The Central Florida Fair Cattlemen’s Invitational Ranch Rodeo is unique compared to other Ranch Rodeos held across the state. Because we are an “invitational” and work strategically with our local county Cattlemen’s Associations we are able to preserve the integrity and authenticity of a real Florida Ranch Rodeo, thus showcasing Central Florida’s best cowboys and cowgirls. Ranch Rodeos typically use a combination of roping, horsemanship and ground work skills to create a more genuine presentation of real life ranch work. The equipment and tack used in Ranch Rodeos is the same tack that used by our Florida cowboys back on the ranch. Bucking stock or rough stock are not used in Ranch Rodeos. In addition, a Ranch Rodeo is a team sport there are no events for individual competitors in a Ranch Rodeo. Teams usually consist of five individuals, four men and one woman who generally work together daily on a local cattle ranch. Teams representing Brevard, Desoto, Hernando, Hillsborough, Marion, Orange, Osceola, Pasco, Polk, Seminole, Sumter and Volusia County Cattlemen’s Associations will rope, mug and milk their way for the Championship and the opportunity to represent the Central Florida Fair at the State Finals Ranch Rodeo in October. The Marion County Cattlemen’s Association earned the prestigious title of 2011 Champion Central Florida Fair Ranch Rodeo Team and $1000 for their Cattlemen’s Association. Team members Wesley Markham, Chance Carlisle, Josh Jennings, Auburn Hiers and Haylee Marshburn were awarded trophy buckles.
